CM Punk made his All Elite Wrestling debut at AEW Rampage on Friday night, starting the event with his signature “Cult of Personality” entrance. Since leaving the WWE in 2014, Punk has not competed in an official capacity. He was often asked whether his wrestling career was finished in the years that followed, and although he never really slammed the door shut, it took him seven years to return to the industry. He fought twice in the UFC, worked on numerous comic books, and extended his acting career with parts in Girl on the Third Floor, Rabid, Jakob’s Wife, and Heels during that time away. He temporarily returned to the realm of professional wrestling in 2019, signing with FOX Sports to work as an analyst on the WWE Backstage program on FS1, however the programme was cancelled in mid-2020.
When questioned about AEW after its 2019 debut, Punk said many times that the promotion piqued his attention. Late last year, he told Renee Paquette on Oral Sessions, “I believe the environment has changed significantly since I left. You can play the game of, ‘Oh, AEW was a possibility; would you have gone immediately after leaving WWE?’ If you’re going to play that game, there’s no way they (WWE) would have handled it the way they did, with me being suspended for two months and no one contacting me until the day before my wedding, when I received my release papers. If there had been an AEW, this would not have occurred. Because they would have contacted me and said, ‘Hey, your suspension is ended.’ Are you prepared to return to work? Let’s figure this out together.’ Alternatively, treat it the same way any other sports organization would handle [a] great pitcher f—ing leaving home. They’re not going to allow him quit the squad and join a competitor.”

“What would be required? Oh, my goodness. Without want to offend anybody on either side of the fence, whether WWE or AEW, it would need, first and foremost, an intriguing situation “Added he. “A tale that would be entertaining to tell as well as the most ridiculous amount of money. However, if they offer an engaging narrative, they may save a lot of money. Now, I’m not sure what it is. I’m a fussy man, particularly at this stage in my life. I believe there are more intriguing individuals for me to wrestle on the AEW side of things, owing to the fact that I’ve never wrestled them before. Kenny Omega, Kenny Omega, Kenny Omega, Kenny Omega, Kenny Omega,”
He also revealed that he talked with AEW president Tony Khan when the business initially started, saying recently on Sunday Night’s Main Event, “Yes, I did speak with Tony. My take on this is that I am a man who is continually told, ‘Hey, I’ve got a money person!’ or ‘Hey, I’ve got TV!’ I’ve told him this to his face. For the first 15-20 years of my wrestling career, at least once or twice a year, someone [says], ‘Oh, we’re going to start up and compete with Vince [McMahon.’ I always thought it came from a negative place, since I believe that if you establish a wrestling business, you should always put yourself first. As a result, I mostly adopted a wait-and-see attitude. In that sense, I wasn’t and still am not interested in pro wrestling.”
